CompTIA Security+

Security+ · SY0-701

CompTIA Security+ is the baseline cybersecurity certification most employers screen for, and it is DoD 8570 / 8140 approved — which means for many defense, federal-contractor, and government IT roles, passing it is a hard hiring gate, not a nice-to-have. The vendor-neutral SY0-701 exam blends multiple-choice questions with hands-on performance-based simulations, so cramming definitions alone rarely clears the 750 cut score. This page breaks down exactly what's tested, how it's delivered through OnVUE, and how to get it done right the first time.

EXAM FORMAT

How the SY0-701 exam is built — at a glance

90

Questions, 90 minutes

A maximum of 90 items answered in 90 minutes — roughly a minute each. The mix is mostly multiple-choice plus a handful of interactive performance-based questions.

PBQ

Performance-based

Hands-on simulations — configure a firewall rule, classify attacks, or harden a host — usually shown first. They carry heavy weight, so many candidates flag and return to them.

750

Scaled cut score

Scored 100–900 with a 750 pass mark. Because it's scaled to question difficulty, 750 is not a flat 83% — your result is shown immediately as Pass or Fail.

Question types & pacing

Most items are single- and multiple-response multiple choice, with a few drag-and-drop and simulation PBQs. There is no on-screen calculator and the exam is linear, not adaptive — you can flag questions and review them before submitting, as long as time remains.

How scoring works

CompTIA reports a single scaled score from 100 to 900; 750 passes. Unanswered questions count as wrong, so guessing on anything left blank is to your advantage. SY0-701 launched in November 2023 and replaced the retired SY0-601 version.

WHAT'S TESTED

Five official SY0-701 domains — bars show each domain's share of the exam

1

General Security Concepts

12%

Security controls, the CIA triad, zero trust, cryptographic solutions (PKI, hashing, certificates), and change-management fundamentals.

2

Threats, Vulnerabilities & Mitigations

22%

Threat actors, attack surfaces, malware and social-engineering techniques, vulnerability types, and the mitigation strategies that counter them.

3

Security Architecture

18%

Securing cloud, on-prem, and hybrid architectures; data protection, resilience and recovery design, and secure network and infrastructure concepts.

4

Security Operations

28%

The largest domain: hardening, identity and access management, automation, vulnerability management, monitoring, incident response, and digital forensics.

5

Security Program Management & Oversight

20%

Governance, risk management, third-party and vendor risk, security compliance, audits and assessments, and security awareness — the policy and oversight side that newer candidates often underestimate.

Security Operations alone is more than a quarter of the exam, and combined with Threats, Vulnerabilities & Mitigations it covers half of everything you'll be asked. Weights reflect the official SY0-701 exam objectives published by CompTIA.

DELIVERY & PROCTORING

Two ways to sit the exam — and what to expect on test day

At a Pearson VUE test center

You sit the exam in a quiet, monitored room at a Pearson VUE center. Staff verify your government-issued ID, store your belongings, and watch the room on camera. You're given an erasable noteboard — no personal items are allowed at the desk.

Online, proctored via OnVUE

You take the exam from a private room at home through Pearson VUE's OnVUE platform, monitored by a live proctor. You'll run a system test, an ID check, and a 360° room scan beforehand. No physical scratch paper — only the built-in online whiteboard.

ID & identity check

A valid, unexpired government photo ID with your name matching your CompTIA / Pearson VUE profile exactly. The proctor captures a photo before the exam unlocks.

Environment scan

A clear desk, no second monitor, no phone or notes within reach, and a webcam scan of the room. No one else may enter while the exam is in progress.

During the exam

Stay in frame and on-camera the whole time. There are no scheduled breaks on the online exam. Talking aloud, leaving the seat, or losing connection can flag or void the session.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS

Security+ is the standard entry-level cybersecurity credential

  • Aspiring security analysts and SOC tier-1 candidates
  • DoD 8570 / 8140 IAT II and IAM I personnel and contractors
  • Help-desk staff and sysadmins moving into a security role
  • Career changers entering IT and cybersecurity
  • Candidates building toward CySA+, PenTest+, or SecurityX/CASP+

PREREQUISITES & DIFFICULTY

No mandatory prerequisite — but it's not a memorization test

  • No required prerequisite exam — open to anyone
  • CompTIA recommends Network+ plus ~2 years of security/admin experience
  • Comfort with networking basics, OS hardening, and cryptography
  • Scenario-based questions reward applied judgment over rote facts

Difficulty: SY0-701 is broad rather than deep — its challenge is the sheer span of acronyms, controls, and scenario wording across five domains, plus performance-based questions that demand you actually apply concepts. Most candidates invest 80–120 hours of prep, which is exactly the pressure point our help is designed to remove.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Straight answers about CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701)

What score do you need to pass CompTIA Security+? +
You need a 750 on a scaled range of 100 to 900 to pass the SY0-701 exam. The score is scaled rather than a straight percentage, so you do not need 750 of 900 raw points — the cut score accounts for question difficulty. There is no partial pass; you either clear 750 or you don't, and your Pass/Fail result appears as soon as you submit.
How many questions are on the Security+ SY0-701 exam? +
The SY0-701 exam contains a maximum of 90 questions answered in 90 minutes. It mixes multiple-choice questions with performance-based questions (PBQs) — interactive simulations like configuring a firewall rule or matching attacks to defenses — which usually appear first and carry significant weight. Many candidates flag and return to PBQs after clearing the multiple-choice items.
Can I take CompTIA Security+ online from home? +
Yes. CompTIA delivers Security+ through Pearson VUE either at a physical test center or online via OnVUE, the remote-proctored option you take from a private room at home. OnVUE requires a webcam, a stable connection, a single clear desk, and a 360-degree room scan, with a live proctor monitoring the whole session. There are no scheduled breaks on the online exam.
How much does the CompTIA Security+ exam cost? +
A single SY0-701 voucher retails for about $404 USD. CompTIA also sells discounted bundles (voucher plus a retake or training material) and offers academic and military pricing, so the effective cost can be lower depending on how you buy it. The voucher is paid to CompTIA and is separate from any exam-help arrangement.
How long is Security+ valid and how do I renew it? +
Security+ is valid for 3 years from the date you pass. You can renew it through CompTIA's Continuing Education (CE) program by earning 50 continuing education units, completing a higher-level CompTIA certification, or retaking the current exam version before it expires — so a single pass keeps you compliant for three years.
Do I pay Exam Assist before or after I pass Security+? +
You settle only after your verified passing result is confirmed. There is no upfront fee — you share your exam details, receive an honest feasibility answer, and decide before any money changes hands. We advertise a guaranteed pass with money back if you do not pass; we offer a transparent, results-first arrangement.
