AP CSA & AP CSP
AP Computer Science is College Board's pair of college-level CS exams taken by high-schoolers worldwide: AP Computer Science A (a Java programming exam) and AP Computer Science Principles (a broad computing-foundations exam with the Create performance task). A score of 3 or higher can earn college credit, satisfy a CS prerequisite, and strengthen a STEM application — and because AP exams run only once a year in May, a single weak sitting means waiting a full year to try again. This page covers both exams, exactly how they're built, and how to get them done right the first time.

Two distinct AP Computer Science exams — at a glance
CSA
A 3-hour exam split into two equal halves: 42 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes (55% of the score) and 4 free-response questions in 90 minutes (45%), where you write and trace real Java methods, classes, ArrayLists, and 2D arrays. FRQs are typed straight into Bluebook's built-in code editor.
CSP
A two-part exam: the Create performance task (a program you build in class with 9 hours of allotted time, worth 30%) plus a 2-hour end-of-course exam of 70 multiple-choice questions (worth 70%). It is language-agnostic and concept-driven rather than syntax-heavy.
AP exams run once a year in May. For 2026, the AP CSP end-of-course exam is May 14 and the AP CSA exam is May 15, both at 12 PM local time. The CSP Create performance task must be submitted in Bluebook by April 30, 2026 — miss that deadline and your CSP score is capped no matter how well you do on the MCQ.
Each exam yields a single composite mapped to the 1–5 AP scale. For CSA, your composite is roughly (MCQ ÷ 42 × 55) + (FRQ points ÷ 36 × 45); for CSP it combines the 70-question MCQ with the Create task. There is no fixed pass mark, but most colleges award credit or placement for a 3, 4, or 5 — and selective programs often want a 4 or 5.
Section weights on each exam — bars show share of the total score
Reading and tracing code: control flow, methods, classes and objects, inheritance, ArrayList, 2D arrays, recursion. No on-screen calculator; pacing is roughly two minutes per question.
Four typed Java problems — Methods & Control Structures, Class Design, ArrayList, and 2D Array — each worth 9 points, written directly in Bluebook's code editor.
Single-select and multiple-select questions across the big ideas: Creative Development, Data, Algorithms & Programming, Computer Systems & Networks, and Impact of Computing.
A program of your own design plus a Personalized Project Reference and written responses, completed during 9 hours of in-class time and submitted by the April deadline.
The two exams reward very different skills: CSA punishes shaky Java syntax and weak code-tracing under time pressure, while CSP rewards conceptual breadth and a clean, well-documented Create program. Treating them as interchangeable is the most common mistake — a strong CSP student can still stall on CSA's free-response coding, and vice versa.
Official course codes and components in the AP Computer Science family
| Exam | Focus | Structure | 2026 Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| AP Computer Science A (CSA) | Java programming — college CS I level | 42 MCQ (55%) + 4 FRQ (45%) · 3 hrs | May 15, 2026 |
| AP Computer Science Principles (CSP) | Computing foundations — language-agnostic | 70 MCQ (70%) + Create task (30%) · 2 hrs MCQ | May 14, 2026 (task due Apr 30) |
Both exams are independent: each carries its own 1–5 score, its own registration through your school's AP coordinator, and its own May test date. Students often take CSP earlier in high school and CSA later, but neither is a prerequisite for the other.
Fully digital on Bluebook — and what test day actually looks like
Since 2025, both AP CS exams are fully digital in Bluebook, College Board's locked-down testing app installed on your laptop, Chromebook, or a school device. On CSA you type free-response Java straight into the built-in code editor; on CSP you answer all 70 MCQ on screen. Bluebook restricts other apps, copy/paste, and navigation away from the test while it runs.
AP exams are administered at your school under a live proctor, who manages the room using College Board's Test Day Toolkit on a separate device to confirm seating, read the script, and start and stop sections. There is no at-home online-proctoring option for AP — you test in person on the official May date.
You install Bluebook and complete exam setup ahead of time, signing in with your College Board account so your exam is loaded and your device is ready.
In the room, the proctor confirms your identity and enters a start code from the Test Day Toolkit to unlock the exam. Phones and personal devices are put away.
Timers run inside Bluebook and responses auto-save; if the device drops connection the work is retained. At the end, answers submit automatically — no upload step to fumble.
Built for college-bound students chasing CS credit
No formal requirements — but the bar is real
Difficulty: AP CSA is one of the more demanding AP STEM exams — the free-response coding leaves no room to bluff, and a single off-by-one or null-handling slip costs points across an entire 9-point question. AP CSP looks gentler but the Create task is a slow-burn project that quietly sinks many scores when it's rushed before the April deadline. The once-a-year May window is exactly the pressure point our help is built to remove.
AP CS is a once-a-year, score-or-wait exam where a shaky FRQ in CSA or a rushed Create task in CSP can undo a whole year of work. Exam Assist pairs you with a vetted computer-science specialist and works on a pay-after-you-pass model — so the risk sits with us, not you. No upfront fee, guaranteed results: Exam Assist handles the sitting end to end, and you settle only after the verified result.
Tell us which exam (CSA, CSP, or both), your target score, your May test date, and where things stand with your Create task. Takes a couple of minutes over WhatsApp, Telegram, or Discord.
We review your timeline and target and tell you plainly whether it's realistic — before any money is discussed. If it isn't a fit, we say so.
Exam Assist handles the sitting end to end. You're matched with a CS specialist who maps the work around Java FRQs, the CSP big ideas, the Create task, and the Bluebook environment — discreetly and confidentially.
You only pay once your passing score is confirmed when AP scores release in July. No verified result, nothing owed.
