Central Ideas and Details is one official skill, but the solving task can point either to the text as a whole or to a specific piece of information. That distinction matters during review. A whole-text miss usually concerns scope or the author's main move. A detail miss usually concerns location, paraphrase, speaker, or an answer that adds more than the relevant sentence says.

Read the stem before committing to a reading method. A central-idea stem asks what the text mainly says or does. A detail stem points to information explicitly stated. An inference stem asks what most logically follows or completes the text. An evidence stem supplies a claim and asks which quotation, finding, or data choice best supports it. The words in the stem define the proof burden.
Name the task in the margin or in your head: global, local, infer, prove with text, or prove with data. That label prevents a common mismatch. A striking detail may be correct but too narrow for a central idea. A reasonable summary may be true but fail an inference blank. A related quotation may discuss the topic without proving the exact claim.
Then predict the answer's job, not its final wording. For a central idea, predict topic plus main move. For a detail, paraphrase the requested information. For an inference, predict the least dramatic conclusion the clues justify. For evidence, restate the claim and finish the sentence 'This choice proves it because...' before comparing options.

Compress the entire text into a topic and its main claim, finding, contrast, or purpose.
Local
Find the relevant sentence, paraphrase it, and keep the answer within its stated scope.
Infer
Choose the conclusion with direct clues and the fewest unstated assumptions.

Solve central idea and detail questions by scope
For a central idea, write a two-part compression: topic plus move. Topic names what the passage discusses. Move states what the passage says about it: challenges an assumption, reports a finding, contrasts approaches, explains a limitation, or traces a change. An answer that names only the topic is incomplete, while an answer that captures one example is too narrow.
Consider an original illustration about a community archive that records oral histories, trains local volunteers, and makes recordings searchable for schools. A central idea would include the archive's method and its purpose of preserving and expanding access to local accounts. The fact that volunteers receive audio training is relevant, but it is one detail rather than the whole point.
For a specific detail, locate the smallest part of the text that answers the question and paraphrase it before reading the options. Keep speaker, time, degree, and cause intact. If the passage says a pilot program may reduce delays, a choice saying it eliminated delays exceeds the evidence. If a researcher reports a result, do not transfer the claim to every person mentioned.
Review central-idea errors with a scope code: topic only, detail only, added purpose, wrong emphasis, or too broad. Review detail errors with a location code: wrong sentence, wrong speaker, wrong time, changed degree, or invented relationship. Those labels reveal whether you need whole-text compression or closer local reading.

Solve SAT inference questions with a proof ladder
An inference is not a creative guess. It is the conclusion that best follows from what the text states and implies. Start by listing the clues that matter, then write the safest conclusion they support. 'Safest' does not mean vague; it means no important part of the claim depends on information the passage never gives.
Use an answer-strength scale. Words such as some, may, suggests, or is consistent with usually make narrower claims than all, must, proves, or always. Strong language is not automatically wrong, but it requires equally strong support. If a study found one response under one condition, a universal conclusion about every setting usually outruns the evidence.
Imagine an original text saying a neighborhood library extended weekday hours, evening visits rose during the next month, and survey respondents frequently cited work schedules. A supported inference is that later hours may have made visits more practical for at least some working patrons. The text does not prove that the schedule change caused every additional visit or that all patrons preferred evenings.
Build a proof ladder for each choice. First, can you point to a clue? Second, does the clue support the entire choice? Third, does the choice preserve degree and scope? Fourth, does it avoid outside knowledge? The correct option should survive every rung. A tempting answer often survives the first because it shares a topic, then fails when its cause, certainty, or population is checked.

Match textual evidence to the exact claim
Textual Command of Evidence questions give you a claim or conclusion and ask which choice best supports it. Rewrite that claim in plain language before reading the evidence options. Separate its parts: subject, relationship, direction, degree, and condition. The best evidence must address the controlling parts rather than merely mention the same topic.
Use a because test. Insert the option into this sentence: 'This evidence supports the claim because...' Your explanation should connect the wording of the evidence to the wording of the claim without changing either. If the claim concerns reduced material use, evidence about lower cost may be relevant to the same product but does not prove the named reduction.
Watch for evidence that proves only background. A choice may establish that a problem exists while the claim concerns which solution works better. Another may report one researcher's opinion while the claim concerns measured results. The SAT rewards fit between claim and evidence, not how interesting or authoritative the quotation sounds.
When reviewing, write the missing link. If you cannot complete the because sentence, code the option as relevant-but-non-proving. If it supports only half the claim, code partial support. If it points in the opposite direction, code contradiction. If it changes the group, condition, or comparison, code scope mismatch.

Translate quantitative evidence before choosing
Quantitative Command of Evidence adds a table, bar graph, or line graph to the reading task. Begin outside the answer choices. Read the title, axes or column headers, units, legend, groups, and time period. Then identify the exact comparison named in the claim. A value without its label or unit is not yet usable evidence.
Translate the relevant graphic into one factual sentence. In the original hypothetical table below, the amber-light group has 26 surviving seedlings after four weeks, compared with 18 under blue light and 24 under white light. That sentence can support a narrow claim that the amber group has the highest value in this dataset. It cannot establish why the difference occurred or what every plant species would do.
Only after writing the data sentence should you inspect choices. Check direction, magnitude, group, time, and denominator. If a graph shows a percentage, do not silently treat it as a raw count. If two lines both rise, compare how much and during which interval before claiming one increased faster. If error bars or other uncertainty information appears, use only what the question and graphic justify.
The text and graphic work together. A question may ask which data support a researcher's claim stated in the passage. Restate the claim, translate the relevant data, and connect them with the same because test used for textual evidence. Do not select the most dramatic number when another comparison is the one the claim actually requires.

Review should explain why your answer failed, not merely why the official answer is correct. Copy the stem's task, write the proof target, and assign one code. A central-idea choice can be detail-only or too broad. An inference can be possible-but-unsupported or too strong. Evidence can be relevant-but-non-proving, partial, contradicted, or attached to the wrong subject.
For quantitative items, keep separate codes for wrong group, wrong interval, wrong unit, wrong direction, wrong magnitude, and invented cause. These are reading errors with data, and each one suggests a concrete check. Repeating wrong-direction errors means you should write the data sentence before looking at choices. Repeating wrong-unit errors means labels need a forced pause.
Rework every miss from a blank page. Paraphrase the task, predict the answer, mark the proof, and explain each rejected option. Also review uncertain correct answers; a lucky elimination can hide the same unstable method. When one code stops recurring on unseen questions, mix skills so task recognition becomes part of the practice.

A score band alone does not reveal whether the cause is whole-text scope, inference strength, claim matching, graph reading, vocabulary, or time.

Finish with a later timed Bluebook module or full-length test. Do not use the same questions as measurement immediately after review. Compare error codes and decision time with the original baseline. Use a seven-session proof cycle
A seven-session cycle can organize Information and Ideas work without promising mastery in seven days. Keep learning sessions untimed and explanatory. Keep checkpoints independent and timed. If one skill owns most misses, repeat that skill instead of following the table mechanically. The purpose is to create a complete learn-drill-mix-verify loop.
Do not measure progress with question volume alone. Count how often you identify the task correctly, predict before choices, locate proof, preserve scope, and reject outside knowledge. A smaller reviewed set can change the method more than a large set completed without explanations.
After the cycle, compare error codes. A repeated inference-strength issue needs another focused proof ladder. A repeated graph-unit issue needs a forced label check. Scattered misses that appear only under time may need shorter timed sets. The 30-day study plan can place another cycle around Math, full tests, and test-day work.
