What is ProctorU?

The Guardian browser: a locked-down exam environment
Guardian is a secure internet browser that connects you to your ProctorU session, whichever service line your exam uses. Outside a proctoring session it behaves like an ordinary browser - Meazure notes it can be used for full internet browsing even when not connected to ProctorU, and it is downloadable and deletable like any other application on your computer.
During a session, Guardian works in the background to secure the virtual environment: it locks down the testing computer according to settings configured by the exam administrators and performs continuous checks against those settings throughout the entire exam. Meazure publishes the categories of computer and browser controls available to exam administrators: copy-and-paste functions, screenshot functions, the printing function, browser window size, browser tabs, URL allowlists, virtual machine detection, screen recording capabilities, an application blocklist, and a process blocklist.
Two implications follow from that design. First, your exam owner chooses which of those controls are on for your exam, so two ProctorU sessions can restrict very different things. Second, the lockdown is not a one-time gate at launch - the published description is that the settings are continually checked while you test.

On Live+ and Review+, launch is live-proctored.
