What is the format of the PCAP exam?
Per the Python Institute's official PCAP page, the current exam is PCAP-31-03 (status: Active). It carries 40 questions in a 65-minute exam window, plus 10 minutes for the NDA and tutorial. The item mix is single- and multiple-select questions plus interactive and scenario-based items, and the passing score is 70%. There are no formal prerequisites — the vendor recommends holding the entry-level PCEP first — and the credential stays valid for five years.
Where PCAP sits in the Python Institute track
PCAP — Certified Associate Python Programmer — is the associate level of the Python Institute's certification track. Below it sits PCEP, the Certified Entry-Level Python Programmer (exam PCEP-30-0x); above it sits PCPP1, the Certified Professional in Python Programming 1 (exam PCPP-32-10x). The vendor's free Python Essentials 2 course is the aligned preparation path for PCAP.
The 40-question paper tests working Python rather than trivia: the scenario-based and interactive items ask you to trace real code — control flow, functions, exceptions, modules, and object-oriented basics — under roughly 90 seconds per question.
What does the PCAP-31-04 update mean?
The Python Institute states that PCAP-31-04 is in development, with the updated exam version scheduled for release in Q3 2026. It is explicit about what that does not mean: the PCAP certification remains active, this is a routine exam-version update, and it does not affect the five-year validity of credentials already earned.
The practical reading: booking PCAP-31-03 today is safe — a pass is a five-year credential either way. What changes is preparation material: study outlines labeled for retired versions (31-02 and earlier) drift from the current blueprint.
How much does the PCAP exam cost?
The Python Institute publishes the price ladder: the exam starts from $295, the exam-plus-retake bundle starts from $345, and the exam-plus-retake-plus-practice-test bundle starts from $359. A standalone practice test is $49.
The retake rule completes the math: a failed exam can be retaken only after a 15-day waiting period from the last attempt, and Pearson VUE retake vouchers go through the Pearson VUE Retake Voucher Request Form. The bundle saves money against two single sittings, but the 15-day wait applies regardless of which bundle you bought.
Can you take the PCAP exam at home?
Yes. The Python Institute lists two delivery channels: Pearson VUE, covering Authorized Pearson VUE Testing Centers plus OnVUE Online Proctoring — the at-home, remotely proctored route — and the OpenEDG Testing Service, which delivers through TestNow.
Language availability depends on the channel. English runs on both TestNow and Pearson VUE; Spanish and Japanese run on TestNow. For an at-home English sitting, OnVUE through Pearson VUE is the direct route — the vendor points candidates to pearsonvue.com/pythoninstitute to create the account and book.
Who the PCAP is (and is not) for
Take it if the role asks for proven associate-level Python — junior developer, data analyst, QA automation, or a career-switch portfolio that needs a vendor-backed credential with a five-year validity.
Skip it as a first move if the job description asks for cloud, Kubernetes, or Linux administration — those map to AWS, CKA, or LPIC-1. And if the deadline behind the credential is closer than your study calendar, Exam Assist handles the PCAP sitting end to end, with the service fee due only after the agreed result posts.
