How adaptive module routing works
Each SAT section has two separately timed modules. Reading and Writing gives you two 32-minute modules; Math gives you two 35-minute modules. The first module in a section contains a broad mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. When it ends, Bluebook uses the performance evidence from that module to assign a second module with a targeted mix that is generally higher or lower in difficulty.
Routing happens by section, not once for the whole exam. You can receive a higher-difficulty second module in Math and a lower-difficulty one in Reading and Writing, or the reverse. You cannot return to module 1 after time expires, so checking blanks and obvious errors before submitting it matters. The SAT presents 98 questions, but 98 are not scored. Reading and Writing contains 54 questions across two modules. Math contains 44 across two modules. College Board places two unscored pretest questions in every module, producing 8 pretest questions across the four-module exam. Subtract those from 98 and 90 operational questions remain: 50 in Reading and Writing and 40 in Math.
Pretest questions let College Board collect performance data and evaluate items for possible future use. They are blended into the test, and Bluebook does not mark them. How to read a SAT score report
Start with the two section scores, not the total alone. Compare Reading and Writing and Math with your college targets, then open the Knowledge and Skills detail to find the content areas that need work. College Board reports the approximate number and share of questions in each area and gives a visual performance indicator. It does not reveal which exact live-test questions you missed or which were pretest.
Next, separate score range from percentile. The score range estimates how your result might vary on another administration under identical conditions. A percentile compares the result with a reference group. Neither field means the test added or subtracted points after seeing how students in your room performed.
