What is the format of the CIPT exam?
Per the IAPP Store CIPT exam page, the exam consists of 90 multiple-choice questions with an allotted time of 2.5 hours plus a 15-minute break, and it must be completed within one year of purchase. The exam language is English. Scoring runs 100-500 with a passing score of 300 under the IAPP candidate handbook v5.3.2, and results are immediate with a section breakdown. The price is $550.00 for members and non-members.
What are the CIPT exam domains?
The CIPT Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint v4.0.0, effective September 1, 2025, divides the exam into five domains with published question ranges. Domain I, the privacy technologist's role in the context of the organization, carries 15-19 questions. Domain II, data collection, use, dissemination and destruction, is the heaviest at 19-23. Domain III, privacy risk management, carries 17-21. Domain IV, privacy by design, carries 7-9, and Domain V, privacy engineering and privacy governance, carries 9-11.
The practical reading: nearly half the paper sits in the data lifecycle and risk-management domains, so the exam tests applied engineering judgment on real data flows — collection through destruction — rather than statute recall. CIPT is ANAB-accredited under ISO/IEC 17024, alongside CIPM, CIPP/E, and CIPP/US.
How much does the CIPT exam cost?
The IAPP Store lists the CIPT exam at $550.00, with member and non-member prices identical. The purchase starts a one-year clock: the exam must be completed within one year of purchase. Passing is not the end of the fee list — a Certification Maintenance Fee is required to activate the credential and again for each two-year certification term. That maintenance fee is built into IAPP membership; non-members are encouraged to add it at exam purchase so the credential activates automatically on a pass.
Can you take the CIPT exam at home?
Yes. The IAPP Store states the exam can be taken either virtually from your home or office, or in person at a test center. Remote candidates book from hundreds of daily virtual appointments through Pearson VUE's OnVUE program; in-person candidates choose from over 6,000 Pearson VUE centers. Scheduling runs through the My Purchases section of the MyIAPP account.
OnVUE carries the handbook's rules: a personal computer rather than a work-issued one, no VPN, a system check of microphone, webcam, and internet speed, photo ID with AI face match, four photos of the room, no headphones, and one beverage allowed. Rescheduling or canceling is possible up to 48 hours before the appointment.
Who the CIPT is (and is not) for
Take it if the role asks for proven privacy engineering — building data protection into products and services, designing privacy-respecting systems, and running controls like minimization, limited access, and encryption. It fits software engineers, security engineers, and IT architects whose privacy title needs the technologist credential rather than the legal or management ones.
Skip it as a first move if the job description is about privacy law (that maps to CIPP/E or CIPP/US) or privacy program management (CIPM). And if the deadline behind the credential is closer than your study calendar, Exam Assist handles the CIPT sitting end to end, with the service fee due only after the agreed result posts.
