CIPM Exam Format Explained

The IAPP CIPM exam is 90 multiple-choice questions in 2.5 hours plus a 15-minute break, costs $550, and is scored on a 100-500 scale with 300 to pass — taken at a Pearson VUE center or from home through OnVUE. Every figure below comes from IAPP's own store page, candidate handbook, and Body of Knowledge, retrieved today.

What is the format of the CIPM exam?

Per IAPP's official exam page, the CIPM (Certified Information Privacy Manager) exam consists of 90 multiple-choice questions with an allotted time of 2.5 hours plus a 15-minute break. The exam assesses the skills to establish, maintain, and manage a privacy program across all stages of its operational life cycle. It must be completed within one year of purchase, and it can be taken virtually from home or office through Pearson VUE's OnVUE program or in person at over 6,000 Pearson VUE test centers.

What are the six CIPM domains?

IAPP's CIPM Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint splits the exam into six domains with published minimum and maximum question counts. Domain I, Developing a Framework, carries 14 to 18 questions — the largest single block. Domain II, Establishing Program Governance, and Domain III, Assessing Data, each carry 12 to 16. Domain VI, Responding to Requests and Incidents, carries 10 to 14. Domain IV, Protecting Personal Data, carries 9 to 13, and Domain V, Sustaining Program Performance, carries 7 to 9.

The practical reading: roughly two-thirds of the exam is program construction and operation — governance models, policies, metrics, and audits — not privacy law. Candidates arriving from a CIPP/US background should expect a management exam, not a second statute exam.

The Body of Knowledge is reviewed annually, and IAPP communicates changes at least 90 days before new content appears in the exam, so the blueprint you download is the blueprint being tested.

How is the CIPM scored, and what is the passing score?

IAPP's Privacy Certification Candidate Handbook (version 5.3.2, effective June 1, 2026) states that all core IAPP exams are scored on a 100-500 scale with a passing score of 300. Results are immediate, with a section-by-section breakdown.

Two scoring cautions come straight from the handbook. First, 300 is a scaled score, not a raw percentage — do not average practice-section percentages into a pass prediction. Second, the exam may include unscored pilot items, so a question that feels off-script is not necessarily counted.

How much does the CIPM exam cost?

The IAPP store lists the CIPM exam at $550.00 — the same price for members and non-members. Passing the exam does not by itself activate the credential: a Certification Maintenance Fee is required to activate certification and again for each two-year term. That fee is built into IAPP membership, and non-members are encouraged to purchase it with the exam so it activates automatically on a pass.

Two smaller budget items are easy to miss. The official CIPM practice exam is $55, and the exam must be completed within one year of purchase — a lapsed voucher means the $550 is gone.

Can you take the CIPM exam at home?

Yes. IAPP's exam page states the CIPM can be taken virtually from your home or office through Pearson VUE's OnVUE program, with hundreds of virtual appointments available daily, or in person at over 6,000 Pearson VUE test centers. The exam is offered in English, German, French, Chinese, and Brazilian Portuguese. Scheduling runs through your MyIAPP account into the Pearson VUE portal.

The OnVUE rules from the candidate handbook are strict: a personal computer rather than a work-issued device, no VPN, a system check of microphone, webcam, and internet speed, a photo ID check with AI face matching, four photos of your surroundings, no one entering the room, no food, exactly one beverage, and no headphones. Rescheduling or canceling is free up to 48 hours before the appointment.

Who the CIPM is (and is not) for

Take it if the role asks for privacy program management — building the framework, running governance, owning metrics and audits. The CIPM is ANAB-accredited under ISO/IEC 17024:2012, which is why employers treat it as the management benchmark beside the legal-specialist CIPP credentials.

Skip it as a first move if the job description asks for U.S. privacy law (that is the CIPP/US) or EU data-protection law (the CIPP/E). And if the deadline behind the credential is closer than your study calendar, Exam Assist handles the CIPM sitting end to end, with the service fee due only after the agreed result posts.
