What is the format of the AIGP exam?
Per the IAPP store page, the AIGP exam consists of 100 questions with an allotted time of 2.75 hours plus a 15-minute break, and it must be completed within one year of purchase. The exam language is English. Scoring runs 100-500 with a passing score of 300 under the IAPP candidate handbook v5.3.2, and results are immediate with a section breakdown. The fee is $649.00 for members and $799.00 for non-members.
What are the four AIGP domains?
The AIGP Body of Knowledge version 2.1 took effect 2 February 2026, superseding version 2.0.1. IAPP reviews the BoK annually and communicates changes at least 90 days before new content appears in the exam.
Domain I, Understanding the foundations of AI governance, carries 16-20 questions: what AI governance is, and the principles and pillars of a governance program regardless of industry or size. Domain II, Understanding how laws, standards and frameworks apply to AI, carries 19-23: the major elements of current AI laws, including the EU AI Act, the South Korean AI Basic Law, and US federal and state AI laws.
Domain III, Understanding how to govern AI development, carries 21-25 questions across designing, building, training, testing, and maintaining AI systems. Domain IV, Understanding how to govern AI deployment and use, carries 21-25: selecting a model — your own or a third party's — then deploying, monitoring, and maintaining it responsibly. Half the exam sits on that development-to-deployment lifecycle.
How much does the AIGP exam cost?
$649.00 for IAPP members and $799.00 for non-members, per IAPP's official store, with one year from purchase to complete the exam. The official practice exam is $60.00. Annual professional membership is $295.00, which matters if you plan to stack IAPP credentials.
Certification runs in two-year terms. To maintain it you submit 20 continuing-education credits mapped to the AIGP BoK and pay the certification maintenance fee — covered by membership for members; non-members get the first CMF inside the exam fee and pay $250 at recertification.
Can you take the AIGP exam at home?
Yes — IAPP's store page states the exam can be taken virtually from your home or office through Pearson VUE's OnVUE program, with hundreds of virtual appointments available daily, or in person at a test center. Scheduling runs through the My Purchases section of your MyIAPP account into Pearson VUE.
OnVUE rules, per the candidate handbook v5.3.2: a personal computer only, no VPN, no headphones, four photos of your room at check-in, AI-assisted ID verification, and one beverage allowed. Reschedule or cancel up to 48 hours before your appointment. Results post immediately with a section breakdown.
Who is the AIGP for — and who should wait?
The AIGP fits AI-governance, risk, compliance, privacy, and policy professionals whose roles now name the credential — and engineers pulled into model-review work. There are no formal prerequisites; the store asks only whether you have attempted the AIGP before or hold another IAPP certification, because that changes your checkout and term alignment.
Wait if your timeline sits inside 48 hours of an appointment with no room, hardware, or ID readiness — the OnVUE checklist is unforgiving at zero hour. If the exam itself is the blocker rather than the calendar, Exam Assist handles the AIGP sitting end to end, and the service fee is due only after the agreed result posts.
