ACT Science tips: Find the source before solving
The ACT Science tips that transfer across passages begin with source selection: identify whether the answer lives in a graph, table, experiment description, model, or viewpoint. Then read labels and variables, state the relationship in words, and choose the answer that matches the evidence without adding a scientific story the passage does not support.
Use a short sequence: source, labels, direction, evidence. For experiments, add independent variable, dependent variable, controls, and comparison. For conflicting viewpoints, map each explanation separately. Most mistakes come from reading the wrong figure, missing a unit or legend, reversing a trend, or answering from memory instead of the provided result.

Decide whether to take optional ACT Science
Science is an optional add-on for current national ACT testing and does not enter the Composite, which is based on English, Math, and Reading. When you take Science, ACT reports a 1-36 Science score and a STEM score derived from Math and Science. Optional does not mean automatically useful or useless.
Check the admissions, scholarship, and program pages for every target institution, especially for STEM pathways. Then compare one clean official Science diagnostic with the time required to prepare it. A strong, relevant section may add information to the application; an unnecessary add-on may divert limited preparation time from the core Composite sections.
School-day testing needs a separate check. States and districts can decide at the contract level whether Science is included, so a student may not have the same individual choice available in a national Saturday registration. Confirm with the school or testing coordinator before assuming the section can be skipped.

Know the current ACT Science blueprint
The current Science section contains 40 total questions in 40 minutes. ACT's score-report guidance identifies 34 operational questions and 6 embedded field-test questions. You cannot identify the field-test items, so apply the same evidence method to every question.
Interpretation of Data accounts for about 38-50% of the scored blueprint. Scientific Investigation contributes about 18-32%, while Evaluation of Models, Inferences, and Experimental Results contributes about 24-38%. The section draws scenarios from biology, chemistry, Earth and space sciences, and physics.
ACT says advanced subject knowledge is not required, but introductory science background may sometimes be needed. That is a narrower claim than no science knowledge. Build data and experiment reasoning first, then use reviewed official questions to identify any recurring concept or vocabulary gap. Calculators are not permitted on Science.

Read each ACT Science passage type differently
Data Representation passages emphasize graphics and tables. Start with the question, locate the named figure, and read title, axes, units, legend, and direction before values. Many items ask for a direct lookup, comparison, interpolation, extrapolation, or translation between formats. Do not read every paragraph first when the required evidence is already isolated.
Research Summaries describe one or more experiments. Map the independent variable, dependent variable, constants, groups, and procedure changes. Use the table or figure associated with the named study. A question about a new trial usually asks you to extend an observed relationship while keeping the experiment's conditions visible.
Conflicting Viewpoints passages present explanations that disagree because their assumptions or evidence differ. Write one line for each viewpoint: claim, supporting reason, and predicted observation. Answer agreement questions only after mapping both positions. Do not blend them into a compromise the passage never states.

Use data and experiment checks before explaining
For data questions, read direction before story. If temperature rises as pressure falls in the displayed range, state that relationship without inventing a mechanism. Check whether the question asks for a value, comparison, rate, threshold, or prediction. Preserve units and distinguish the measured interval from values outside it.
For experiments, identify what was deliberately changed and what was measured. A control provides a comparison; a constant keeps another condition stable. Repeated trials address reliability, while a new variable may test the explanation's range. Do not call every unchanged quantity a control group or confuse correlation in a graph with a designed manipulation.
Original example: seedlings receive three light durations while water and soil remain constant, and height is recorded after two weeks. Light duration is the independent variable, height is the dependent variable, and water and soil are controlled conditions. The results can support a relationship within those tested settings, not a universal claim about every plant.

Control ACT Science timing by evidence source
Forty minutes for 40 total questions creates a one-minute average before passage reading. Use that as a section budget, not an equal limit. Direct figure lookups should create room for experiment-design and conflicting-viewpoint items. A full read of every paragraph before every question usually duplicates work.
Use a stop rule when evidence is not becoming clearer. Confirm that you are in the named figure or study, check labels once, eliminate choices with the wrong direction or scope, mark the item, and move. Returning after other questions can help because later stems may clarify the structure of the passage.
Test passage order only with current official practice. A graph-first order may help one student and create navigation cost for another. Compare completion, accuracy, and switching errors. Keep the official order unless a deliberate alternative produces repeatable evidence of better control.

Practice ACT Science with an evidence log
Take one current official timed section and preserve the result, passage order, and notes. ACT's free online practice page does not save responses after closing or refreshing, so record the raw score, guesses, and timing before leaving. Review correct guesses and slow answers alongside misses.
Classify each issue as wrong source, label or unit, trend reversal, variable confusion, unsupported inference, viewpoint blend, missing background concept, or pacing. Then write a prevention cue. More science content is the wrong repair for a source-selection error; more graph practice is the wrong repair for a misunderstood experimental control.
Use a small current-format set to repair the process, then return to mixed passage types. A fresh checkpoint should show whether you select the source faster, preserve units and scope, and explain distractors more accurately. Do not translate one strong practice result into a guaranteed score or admissions benefit.

Fix recurring ACT Science errors
Replace broad labels such as bad at science with a testable cause. If you used Figure 1 when the question named Figure 2, add a source check. If you reversed axes, read the label and unit aloud in practice. If you confused independent and dependent variables, rewrite the experiment as changed X, measured Y.
Outside knowledge should be controlled. Use it only when the question requires a basic concept and the passage does not provide the answer. When the data conflict with what you expected, the displayed evidence controls the answer. When a term repeatedly blocks reviewed official items, add that exact term to a compact glossary instead of building an unlimited fact list.
Your final Science sheet should contain graph checks, experiment labels, viewpoint mapping, scope words, and a small glossary from real misses. Because calculators are not permitted, include any mental comparison or proportion cue that repeatedly matters. Remove an entry only after it works on unseen material.
